_ Michigan is considering a bill that would add one point to a person's driver's license if a citation indicated that use of a cell phone contributed to a traffic violation.
_ New York is the only state to ban the use of handheld cell phones while driving.
_ Maine and New Jersey ban cell phones for drivers younger than 21 who hold a learner's permit.
_ Arizona, Illinois, Massachusetts, Arkansas, Tennessee, New Jersey and Rhode Island ban school bus drivers' use of cell phones.
_ Illinois and Florida have restrictions on drivers using headsets, including those attached to cell phones.
_ Kentucky, Louisiana, Nevada, Florida, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Oregon prohibit local ordinances affecting cell phone use by drivers.
_ Forty-two states this year are considering cell-phone regulation bills.
_ Seventeen states are collecting data on cell-phone involvement in crashes.
