(Norman-AP) -- Norman Mayor Ron Henderson says the University of Oklahoma should consider prohibiting freshman from having cars on campus.

An OU official says such a move isn't likely.

OU parking system director Theta Dempsey says students are much more dependent on cars than in the past. Dempsey also says banning cars for freshman would hurt student recruiting.

Henderson's says eliminating cars for the more than 5,000 OU freshmen would help decrease congestion. The suggestion was made as part of a $67,000 transportation needs study for the city of Norman.

The study is an attempt to increase the use of public transportation in Norman and east traffic congestion.

Henderson says he plans to discuss the plan with OU officials.
