Carson seeks investigation into Tar Creek report

Congressman Brad Carson today asked for an investigation into why a report on the Tar Creek Superfund Site was revised. The area in far northeastern Oklahoma is contaminated by lead, zinc and acid mine water after years of lead and zinc mining.

The Council on Environmental Quality report released last month made changes in a draft version. The draft said a federal team favored buying land from residents who want to move, a plan Carson supports.

Carson says last month's report made changes without consulting the scientists who studied the area. A technical team visited Tar Creek in January 2002 to study the area and report on their findings.

One member of the technical team says he did not approve the changes made to the draft. Carson wants the Inspector General's Office of the Environmental Protection Agency to investigate the changes and find who authorized them.
