Gov. Brad Henry was elected chairman of the Southern Growth Policies Board at the group's meeting in Biloxi, Miss.
"I hope to use the leadership post to advance Oklahoma's economic development efforts and make our state an even greater player in both the regional and national economies," Henry said.
Henry returned to Oklahoma late Monday and was not present for his formal election Tuesday.
As chairman, he will oversee development of the SGPB's 2004 Report on the Future of the South.
The board is based in Research Triangle Park in North Carolina. It was formed in 1971 to advance economic strategies of 13 southern states.
At Henry's request, the 32nd SGPB Conference will be held in Oklahoma City next year.
