According to the American Psychiatric Association, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, is the most common behavior disorder in school-aged children.
Meredith Acacia, Mother: "Matthew, we had concerns of his attention, son has ADHD dating back to at least pre school, probably when he was four, I knew something was a little off."
Meredith's older son 8 year old Mathew, was diagnosed with ADHD two years ago-recently she just discovered that her three-and-a-half year old son Andrew might have the same disorder too.
Meredith Acacia, Mother: "He has zero attention, to just about anything."
Core symptoms of ADHD include inattention, impulsivity and, hyperactivity.
According to studies presented at the 156th annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association, data from two separate, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials showed that the medication, PROVIGIL improves ADHD symptoms in children.
Thomas Rugino, MD: "The Provigil truly did help their symptoms of treats children with inattention, their distractibility and most ADHD importantly, seemed to cut down a lot of their impulse control problems"
Dr. Rugino has treated hundreds of children with adhd. He says provigil has been effective in targeting a specific area in the brain.
Thomas Rugino, MD: "Since Provigil has a totally different mechanism of action, and it seems to be so well tolerated, it represents a new strategy for the treatment of ADHD."
It's a treatment that dr. Rugino says can significantly change the quality of life for children with this disease.
Thomas Rugino, MD: "I've had several parents get back to me after treating their children with Provigil, telling me that the homework is going much more smoothly, and that the stress level in the household has just gone down amazingly."
Many doctors also say that taking one pill a day eliminates the need of getting up during class to go to the nurse's office. It can also make a child feel more in control of their treatment.
