(Tulsa-AP) -- Representative Brad Carson will seek $2.5-million to start a clean up project at the Tar Creek Superfund Site.

The money will cover the first year of a three-year, $9-million study by the University of Oklahoma on 26 of the site's 46 square miles.

A clean-up project at the former zinc and lead mine includes treating wetlands to remove metals from surface water, the removal and revegetation of an estimated 318 acres of mine waste and sealing open mine shafts.

Carson says getting money to help relocate the people living in the nearby towns of Picher and Cardin is still a top priority.
