(Oklahoma City-AP) -- The number of deaths on Oklahoma highways is down for the year and during the month of April.
The state Department of Public Safety reports 189 traffic fatalities so far during 2003, down by 33 from the 222 who had died in auto accidents at the same time a year ago.
A total of 39 traffic fatalities are reported for April, a decline of eight from the 47 who were killed on the state's roadways in April last year.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says unsafe speed is the leading cause of fatality accidents.
