(Kansas City, Kansas-AP) -- A powerful tornado that stayed on the ground for at least two and a half hours slashed through the Kansas City area this afternoon. One death and numerous injuries are reported.

The fatality was in the Kansas City, Kansas, area. Spokesman Don Denney for the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas, said searchers are looking for more possible victims.

Denney says "dozens and dozens" of homes were significantly damaged, and several destroyed.

In some places, the swath of destruction was one-quarter mile wide, as several twisters swept through the western and northern parts of the metro area. Kansas City International Airport flights were canceled for a time, and all three terminals evacuated.
