(Duncan-AP) -- Stephens County could become the first county in the state to dedicate a sales tax for schools.

County commissioners say they want to help their school system with a one-cent countywide sales tax.

A few cities have passed similar plans and at least one other county is considering the same thing.

Gayle Ward with the Association of County Commissioners say such taxes for schools could become a developing trend at a time when education dollars are hard to come by.

Details of the Stephens County plan have yet to be worked out and an election date has not been set.

If Stephens County goes through with its tax plan, sales tax money would be split between all county schools. Money would be divided based on enrollment.

In Rogers County, school administrators are urging commissioners to pass a temporary penny sales tax for schools.
