Firefighters Wednesday extinguished the last of a large oil tank fire in Glenpool. The fire began Monday night at around 9 o'clock, when diesel fuel exploded while being transferred from a pipeline to a tank. Glenpool schools will reopen Thursday after being closed for two days. Residents near the tank have received the "all clear" to return home.
The tanks are owned by ConocoPhillips and company spokesman Rich Johnson says air monitors show "minimal impact" to air quality.
ConocoPhillips officials are eager to start searching for clues to what really triggered the initial explosion. So far, most believe it was a spark of static electricity. But before the burnt out tanks can be looked at, inspectors will have to wait until the water used to put out the blaze is pumped out.
