(New York-AP) -- A deal worth ten billion dollars is reportedly in the making between SBC Communications and a division of General Motors.

Saturday's New York Times reports that SBC wants to buy G-M's Direc TV satellite-television unit.

That's according to anonymous sources close to the talks.

An SBC spokesman has refused to comment on any deal. A spokesman for the GM Hughes Electronics division, which includes Direc TV, isn't talking either.

SBC's pursuit of Direc TV would puts it in direct competition with Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation.

Murdoch has been trying to acquire the operation for several years as part of a push into the US market.

Still no comment from News Corporation.
