The Oklahoma pardon and parole board recommended clemency for hundreds of prisoners Tuesday.
It’s a way to save money for the state. News on Six reporter Emory Bryan says clemency means that about 200 offenders - mainly drug abusers and drunk drivers - will get out of prison because the state needs the space - and wants to save the money it would cost to keep them.
The Pardon and Parole Board met in McAlester Tuesday, to review the record of several hundred prisoners, whittled down from a list of 3,000 suggested by the governor.
Nearly all of those considered won an early release - for most - a difference of about six months in their sentence. Fred Morgan with the Tulsa County District Attorneys Office: "In almost every case they got exactly what they deserved, and we're disappointed that this many people from Tulsa County are being considered for the early release docket."
The board recommendations go to Governor Keating for consideration before he leaves office.
Another round of clemency hearings is likely, as the state continues to cut the budget of the prisons.
