Tulsa Public Schools picked out its top 20 students Wednesday - the first time they've recognized the district's best students all at once.
News on Six reporter Emory Bryan says it is not often the school district allows children to miss school to have pictures made, but these 20 students are trusted representatives of Tulsa Public Schools. They're the 20 best graduating seniors in the district - a girl and boy from each high school.
Tulsa School Superintendent Dr David Sawyer, "For the school district it gives us a chance to brag a little bit about the programs we have in place and how well our students are doing with them."
Drew Lansdown is one of the top 20. A senior at Washington High School - he's into Spanish and student council - plays piano and baseball, with very good grades. "I'm very honored to get it because at BTW there are so many qualified students to be picked from all of them as the top is a great honor."
Drew plans to become a physician - as does his classmate Oma Agbai, also one of the Top 20. She and Drew represent Washington High in the first Top 20 class.
Emily Stuart represents Memorial High - and she too plans to study medicine. "I'm going to go to the University of Missouri and study biochemistry and then do premedicine and become an orthopedic surgeon."
Not all of the top 20 will be doctors. A few are studying engineering, one plans to become a teacher, one hopes to be a poet, and few haven't decided. But all at the top of their class - with characteristics that can help them find success.
Besides the honor of being named to the top 20, the students will receive a $500 scholarship for college.
