STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) _ Skyler Holman's first-period pin in the final match of the night gave Oklahoma State a 25-16 dual victory over Iowa State in Big 12 wrestling Friday.
The back-and-forth dual was tied 16-all after Iowa State 197-pounder Cael Sanderson pinned Willie Gruenwald at 3:21, in the eighth match of the evening. Sanderson, seeking his fourth straight national title, improved to 28-0 this season and 147-0 for his career.
Heavyweights James Huml and Matt Knauer went next, with Huml winning 7-4 to give Oklahoma State a 19-16 lead. Huml used a takedown in each of the first two periods to build a 5-1 lead. A pair of escapes got Knauer to within 5-3 in the third before Huml sealed it with his third takedown.
At 125 pounds, Holman was taken down twice in the first 90 seconds by Ty Malia. Trailing 4-1, he scored a reversal with 49 seconds left in the period, then got a three-point near fall before scoring the pin with 21 seconds remaining.
Oklahoma State is now 16-3 overall, 3-0 in the Big 12. The Cyclones dropped to 13-4 and 1-2.
