OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ Students could start school after Labor Day instead of in mid-August under a proposal being considered by school officials.
The Oklahoma City School District is considering polling parents about whether they prefer a later start date for the school year. The district has contacted a polling firm about conducting a telephone survey.
Before the school board sets its 2002-2003 calendar, officials want to ask parents whether they prefer that children go back to school in mid-August, after Labor Day or somewhere in between.
The board voted 4-4 last month on whether to approve a school calendar starting Aug. 12 and ending May 16. A second proposal called for a Sept. 3 to June 9 school year, but it never came to a vote.
Board members decided then to delay the decision.
The school district's calendar committee, as well as the administration, has recommended an Aug. 12 start date.
Proponents say it allows high school final exams to be taken before holiday break and gives students more instruction days before state-mandated testing in the spring.
Those who prefer a later start say it would allow more time for family vacations and would save the district money in utility bills.
