A low pressure system was expected to bring more snow to the Great Lakes region Tuesday, while a mix of rain and sleet was forecast for much of the Deep South.

Snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches were expected over parts of Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, western Pennsylvania and western New York, with a few places receiving up to 8 inches.

Freezing rain was predicted for portions of Louisiana, southern Mississippi and southern Alabama as a result of a low pressure system forming over the Texas coast.

The rest of the East was expected to see partly cloudy to mostly cloudy skies with cold temperatures.

Frigid weather was expected to remain in the central part of the country, with a cold front moving over the Northern Plains bringing scattered snow showers to parts of Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota. Snow accumulations of less than 2 inches were predicted.

In the West, high pressure was expected to bring clear skies and dry conditions to most of the region. Scattered showers producing some flooding was possible in the Pacific Northwest.

Highs on Tuesday were forecast in the low to middle teens in the northern Plains; 20s in New England, the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley, central Plains and northern Rockies; 30s in the Carolinas, Tennessee Valley, southern Plains and the Texas coast; 40s in the mid-Atlantic, northern Texas, southern Rockies and Pacific Northwest; 50s in much of the Deep South; 60s along the California coast; and 60s and 70s in the desert Southwest and Florida.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Monday ranged from a high of 72 degrees in Thermal, Calif., Yuma Ariz., and Jacksonville, Fla., to a low of 20 below in Williston, N.D.
