(San Francisco-AP) -- The San Francisco Giants may not be in the World Series this year, but at least one Giants player can say he's Number One.

The Sporting News has selected Giants slugger Barry Bonds as its baseball player of the year.

Bonds set a major-league home record with 73 dingers. He batted .328, drove in 137 runs and broke Babe Ruth's single-season walk record with 177.
