Some of Tulsa's police cars are headed to the shop next month, to get a new safety kit installed.
Ford will attach plastic moldings to the rear axles on the cities 380 Crown Victoria police cars. That change will take place free of charge. The idea is to keep any sharp objects from ripping into the 18-gallon gas tank if the car gets hit from behind.
12 officers across the country have died when someone crashed into their Crown Victorias at high speeds and caused a fire. Ollie Harris with Tulsa Police: "Generally, it's highway patrol who are around high speeds on the highway that are pulled over and get hit by people going 70 or more."
It will take 45 days to finish the work on Tulsa's fleet. The company will also issue new guidelines for how officers can pack their trunks for optimal safety.
