Oklahomans will be headed to the Middle East on peacekeeping missions. Thursday, the Department of Defense put more than 800 Oklahoma Army National Guard soldiers on alert.
Members of the 45th Infantry Brigade will be deployed for duty in the Sinai and Kuwait.
The 1st Battalion, 180th Infantry headquartered in Durant with units in Ada, Atoka, Edmond, Idabel, McAlester, Poteau, Sallisaw, and Shawnee, will take over the peacekeeping duties in the Sinai, while Company A and Company B, 1st Battalion, 179th Infantry will assume the duties in Kuwait.
The guard would gone for six months. This would be the largest call-up of Oklahoma Army Guard forces since Desert Storm 12 years ago.
