Tuesday, students in Tulsa Public Schools will head back to class. Some may have to do a little extra work to get to the bus stop.
That's because the district cut 50 buses and their routes in an effort to save half a million dollars. Students will use a central bus stop plan, where they will have to walk up to a mile and a half to catch a bus, the same distance students that live near schools already have to walk.
The director of transportation at TPS, Bob Haddox, talks about the school’s district response to parent’s concerns. “We had some parents express some concerns, but what we ask the parents to remember is the fact that over half the student population about 23,000 students walk these distances every day if they live less than a mile and a half and are not eligible for transportation. So we're just moving that requirement on to the students that do ride.â€
Eight people will be monitoring the new system to make sure it's working and is safe for students.
