MESQUITE, Texas (AP) _ A sport utility vehicle smashed into a flatbed tractor-trailer parked on the shoulder of an interstate Monday, killing five people and injuring three, authorities said.

All of the victims were inside the SUV, which appeared to have hit the trailer while traveling at a high speed about 8 a.m., said fire department spokesman Mark Noble.

Mark Ball, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Transportation, said there was no construction in the area, about 20 miles east of Dallas, and that judging from aerial photos, the tractor-trailer was ``well off the highway right of way.''

Mesquite police Sgt. William Artesi said four of the dead were children, in their teens or younger. The driver was among the injured, he said.

One male victim was in critical condition at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas, while another male was undergoing surgery and in critical condition at Parkland Memorial Hospital, spokeswomen said.

The third victim was at Children's Medical Center of Dallas, with family requesting confidentiality.

The accident came a day after a Greyhound bus hit the back of a tractor-trailer near Colorado City, Texas, killing three people. About three dozen passengers were injured in Sunday's wreck some 250 miles west of Dallas on the same highway, Interstate 20.
