Girl Scouts everywhere play a role in community service. A Tulsa troop committed to that role is headed overseas to help others.
News on Six reporter Patrina Adger says the young ladies were emotional just talking about this trip. Girl Scout Troop 215 in Tulsa is traveling abroad to provide humanitarian aid to young people in West Africa.
The high school seniors from Booker T. Washington will spend two weeks in the Republic of the Gambia. The girls are working with Tulsa's Christ for Humanity to help build a secondary school for the kids in Gambia, which is one of the poorest countries in the world.
They'll offer lessons in first aid, dental hygiene and will share their personal experiences living here in America. At the same time, they hope to learn from them as well. Ronda Tyson with Christ for Humanities: "Some of them are excited, some of them are a little nervous, some of them are just don't know what to think. The reality hasn't hit and probably won't hit until we take off."
The trip is also part of the troop's efforts to earn the Gold Award, which is the highest award in Girl Scouts. It'll take about 20 hours to get to Gambia.
They hope the trip will provide some cultural enlightenment as well as an opportunity to help the young people in that country emotionally and physically.
