For one OSU-Tulsa student, graduation means overcoming some amazing odds.

We first met Kamari Beard in 1996 when she gave birth to her first son one day after her home was destroyed by fire. For the past ten years Beard has been determined to achieve her dream of a higher education.

After the fire, the single mother of two believed that dream had gone up in smoke. And just five weeks ago she underwent surgery for cervical cancer-- another obstacle she says she's overcome. "There's something going on in everyone's life and so that has helped me realize that I'm normal, you know things happen but I just jump over the hurdle and I keep going, I keep going."

You will see Kamari's picture plastered all over OSU-Tulsa's advertisements in local magazines as well as the campus course book catalog. It's part of another marketing strategy targeting non-traditional students.
