OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ The Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals on Monday set a June 25 execution date for Grady County death row inmate David Jay Brown, who was convicted of the 1988 murder of his former father-in-law.
Attorney General Drew Edmondson sought an execution date on April 25, one day after a stay of execution for Brown was lifted. Brown's Feb. 5 execution was stayed by U.S. District Judge Wayne Alley.
Alley granted a stay until the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver decided whether to grant a new round of appeals. The appellate court denied permission on April 23.
Alley appointed new attorneys to represent Brown in January after Brown fired his previous legal team.
Brown, 48, was convicted and sentenced to death for the Feb. 19, 1988, murder of Eldon Lee McGuire at McGuire's home in Norge. Authorities said Brown shot McGuire eight times.
Brown's is the only execution scheduled in the state. Oklahoma has executed two inmates this year, John Joseph Romano on Jan. 29 and David Wayne Woodruff on Jan. 31.
