One of Tulsa's largest employers is moving ahead with plans to cut its workforce. WorldCom announced last month it will lay off 3,700 workers worldwide, including 100 employees in Tulsa.
The Tulsa layoffs are coming in the company's customer service section and its wholesale division, which supplies service to other businesses.
Gary Akin is the Chamber President in Owasso, a town where many WorldCom employees live. "The telecommunications industry is very volatile right now. We've seen that in other companies and such. Yes it is kind of up and down, but we are optimistic."
WorldCom says no further layoffs are planned in the near future. The company did post a profit for the first quarter of this year. But its stock has dropped 88% in the past year.
