STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) _ Payne County prosecutors have charged a former Stillwater firefighter with nine criminal counts stemming from alleged sexual misconduct involving a 9-year-old girl.
Elmer Brown paid a $5,000 cash bond and was released from the Payne County jail Wednesday after his initial arraignment on three counts of attempted first-degree rape, three counts of lewd molestation and three counts of indecent exposure.
Brown, 50, retired from the Stillwater Fire Department in January.
The girl, who lives out of state, told investigators that Brown assaulted her when she visited him at Christmas and in the summer. According to a Payne County Sheriff's Department affidavit, the girl said Brown came into her room naked and tried to have sex with her nearly every morning in the summer of 2001.
According to the document, three of the charges stem from incidents when the girl was 9, and the rest are from when she was 10 years old. The girl is now 11.
Brown has pleaded innocent and is scheduled for preliminary hearing June 10.
If convicted, he could be sentenced to as many as 102 years in prison and up to $60,000 in fines.
