When it's time to retire Old Glory, nothing but a formal ceremony will do. Tulsa's Grissom Elementary School held one Wednesday to retire two of their school flags.
The students got to see a couple of ways to properly retire the American flag. Joe Masek, Boy Scout pack leader, "There are three types of flag burning ceremonies, one for the thirteen colonies, burning the whole flag." Katelin Hannaford, student, "It was very surprising for me because I have never done this before. And it was nice to know our flag is free."
It is best to retired a flag when it is tattered or faded, and beyond repair. Anyone, not just veteran or military organizations, can retire a flag.
