(Oklahoma City-AP) -- University of Oklahoma basketball coach Kelvin Sampson is being honored by the Red Earth Society's board of directors as its Ambassador of the Year.

The award created in 1991 to promote pride in American Indian heritage and recognize those who make significant contributions in presenting a positive image of Indians.

Sampson is a Lumbee Indian and will receive the award during a June 7th ceremony in Oklahoma City.
