PASADENA, Calif. (AP) _ Gemstar-TV Guide International Inc. on Monday named Fox Cable Networks Group president and chief executive Jess Shell as its co-president and chief operating officer.
Shell will be based in the company's Pasadena headquarters and will report directly to Henry C. Yuen, chairman and chief executive.
More than 100 million people nationwide use Gemstar media properties weekly. Its products and services include eBook, the VCR Plus system, interactive program guide and its SkyMall merchandise catalog and are available in more than 60 countries.
``I have long admired Jeff's financial and operational expertise as well as his keen knowledge of the cable industry. Jeff substantially deepens our management team and enhances our ability to maximize the long-term value of our businesses. His operational leadership will also permit me to intensify my focus on developing innovative technologies and on expanding our business, both domestically and internationally,'' Yuen said in a statement.
Shell said in a statement he was excited about coming on board.
``The company has built an exceptional foundation of assets, including such powerful brand names as TV Guide and innovative technologies and networks that reach more than 100 million people every day. Now is the perfect time to leverage the strengths of these assets and to expand our business.''
News Corp. last year doubled its stake in Gemstar to 44 percent.
