EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) _ Tony Award-winning actress Julie Harris was in serious but stable condition Wednesday after being found semiconscious in her Chicago apartment over the weekend.

St. Francis Hospital spokeswoman Phyllis Pavese refused to give details about Harris' illness but did say it was not life-threatening.

Harris, 75, had been performing in a production of Claudia Allen's ``Fossils'' at the Victory Gardens Theater in Chicago. When she failed to show up for Saturday's performance, theater staff members went to her apartment and found her, said Marcelle McVay, the theater's managing director.

``She's stable and improving, but it looks like her recovery will be a long one,'' McVay said.

Harris has won a record five best actress Tony awards for her theater work. She also has performed in several films, including ``The Haunting'' ``Member of the Wedding'' and ``East of Eden,'' in which she was cast opposite James Dean.

She also appeared in the long-running prime-time TV serial ``Knots Landing.''

Victory Gardens is receiving a Tony for regional theaters at this weekend's Tony Awards presentations. Harris taped the presentation Friday, McVay said.
