(Norman, Oklahoma) - The head of the Texas A-and-M University journalism department's been appointed to be the new dean of the University of Oklahoma journalism school.

Charles C. Self says he intends to make the program nationally recognized within five years.

O-U Regents are expected to approve Self's appointment as dean of the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication today or tomorrow. He would start work in Norman July First.

Self says O-U already has one of the best journalism programs in the Big 12, but says the next step is gaining national respect.

O-U President David Boren says Self is regarded highly by journalism educators across the nation.

The OU journalism program has 850 students and 28 faculty members.
