LAWTON, Okla, (AP) -- A Cherokee tribal headdress is missing from The Museum of The Great Plains.

Museum staff discovered the headdress was missing after an inventory of items in storage was completed.

Museum director Richard Welch said the headdress has 23 eagle feathers in its crown and 36 in its trail with records dating the artifact to the early 1900s, but it may go back as early as the 1880s. Estimated value of the headdress is $700,000, but because it contains eagle feathers it is illegal to sell the museum piece.

A police report was filed stating the piece might have been stolen.
