KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Terry Shea, who resigned as Rutgers' coach after five losing seasons, joined the staff of Dick Vermeil as quarterbacks coach of the Kansas City Chiefs.
His hiring Tuesday was announced by Chiefs president and general manager Carl Peterson.
Shea's Rutgers teams were 3-8 last year and 0-7 in the Big East. During his five years the Scarlet Knights were 11-44.
Shea, who played quarterback in college at Oregon, went to Rutgers after a year coaching the quarterbacks and runnning backs at the British Columbia Lions of the CFL.
Earlier, he was the offensive coordinator at Stanford under Bill Walsh from 1992 to 1994. He also worked at Utah State, where Eric Hipple and Bob Gagliano played for him and later became pro quarterbacks.
His first Division I head coaching job was at San Jose State, where he was 15-6-2 and won Big West titles in 1990 and 1992. Among his players was quarterback Jeff Garcia, now with the San Francisco 49ers.
