Ashcroft is a man of principle
This week, the Senate wrapped up confirmation hearings for U.S. Attorney General-designate John Ashcroft. I've had the privilege of knowing and working with former Senator Ashcroft for several years, and can attest to his unbridled integrity and the depth of his character. Mr. Ashcroft has my complete support and I look forward to working with him as attorney general.
Tax relief to counter slowing economy
The continued slowdown in the economy that President-elect George W. Bush has inherited makes a solid case for Congress to pass tax relief to stimulate the faltering economy. Support is building for several measures to complement the president-elect’s across-the-board tax, including an increase in the $500-per-child tax credit, an expansion of individual retirement accounts and 401(k) savings plans and ending the death tax and marriage penalty.
Restoring the military
I am delighted that President-elect Bush has chosen Donald Rumsfeld as his Secretary of Defense. During his confirmation hearings, Rumsfeld, who also served as President’s Ford’s Secretary of Defense, promised close consultation with Congress while he focuses on improving military readiness, and said he is generally opposed to sending U.S. troops on peacekeeping missions. I was also encouraged to hear his call for an effective missile defense to protect the U.S. and its allies in the most cost-effective manner that modern technology offers – something I've advocated since I first took office.
