First, a warning for anyone hit hard during the recent winter storms. The government says that when disaster strikes, scam artists aren't far behind. The Federal Emergency Management Agency says people with damaged home or businesses should be careful when hiring a contractor. Check out the company with the Better Business Bureau, and other professional organizations, and get several written estimates. Be sure to read the fine print and also check references. When you do hire a contractor, get a written contact, and ask for a written guarantee. Pay by check - do not pay with cash.
During the winter, it's also a good idea to have an evacuation lockbox to take with you during an emergency.
Here's what should put in your lockbox.
Copies of birth certificates
Social Security cards
Driver's licenses
Bank account information
Credit card information
Insurance documents.
This could save you time and trouble during a chaotic situation. You can also store family keepsakes in the box.
Most adults avoid giving out personal information online - but what about chilcren? A University of Pennsylvania study recently found that half of children ages 10 to 17 are willing to give their name, address and other personal information in exchange for a free gift. And many teens are willing to give out sensitive information about their parents. The professor who ran the study says parents need to tell their kids what information they should, and should not provide online.
