TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Chris Weinke, the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from Florida State, will skip Saturday's Senior Bowl to rest his injured left foot.
Weinke, who led the Seminoles to their third straight national championship game, said he was pulling out on the advice of his physician, Dr. James Andrews of Birmingham, Ala.
The all-star game for college seniors is in Mobile, Ala.
Weinke said he needs get ready for NFL workouts and an NFL scouting combine next month.
Weinke sprained his foot in September during a 59-7 defeat of Maryland. He didn't miss any games but wore a plastic covering to protect the foot.
The 6-foot-5 quarterback led the nation with a school-record 4,167 yards passing. He threw 33 touchdown passes and had only 11 interceptions during the regular season.
He recovered from a serious neck injury late in the '98 season to become the Atlantic Coast Conference's career passing leader with 9,839 yards.
