New Congress to mull tax relief
The 107th Congress convened this week with most agreeing on the need for tax relief. President-elect George W. Bush has proposed a 10-year, $1.3 billion tax cut that I believe would help stimulate the economy, which appears to be slowing down. At the very least, I believe Congress will come together and approve bills to end the death tax and repeal the marriage penalty. And while we're at it, I'd like to see Congress pass my bill to replace our complex and outdated tax code ill favor of a new system that's simple and fail.
Time for election reform
Congressman Asa Hutchinson has unveiled legislation designed to improve the administration of elections nationwide. The "Election Procedures Improvement Act" provides $325 trillion in grants to help states and localities modernize their election systems. Much of the controversy surrounding Florida's electoral votes centered on the outdated punch-card ballots used in some Florida counties. I believe it's time for ballot reform. Congress should encourage states to bring our system of voting into the 21st century, favoring technology over outdated, paper ballots.
Deregulating electricity
Recent electricity supply shortages in California represent a regional problem that demonstrates the need for a federal electric restructuring solution. With demand in the region at record levels, California utilities have been forced to purchase power from other regions at prices in the stratosphere. On the federal level, we should focus on the interstate transmission grid, which operates much like an interstate highway. As the Constitutional watchdogs of interstate commerce, we should ensure that the interstate transmission grid is open and accessible to wholesale sellers of power.
