An Oklahoma inmate has won a 30-day stay of execution almost 24 hours before his scheduled death. Lieutenant Governor Mary Fallin granted the stay Wednesday for Robert William Clayton. Officials are waiting for D-N-A tests on recovered evidence that could either clear Clayton or support his conviction. The evidence includes a knife.
The 39-year-old was scheduled to die by lethal injection at 9:00 PM Thursday in McAlester. He was convicted of the 1985 murder of Rhonda Kay Timmons. The 19-year-old was killed at a Tulsa apartment complex. Fallin granted the stay in the absence of Governor Frank Keating, who is in Florida for the Orange Bowl.
