Two Creek County children die in a house fire. The parents suspect the lights on the Christmas tree.
It happened south of Terlton in Creek County late Thursday night. KOTV's Jenny McNeill has the story.
The remnants of a 2-year-old house tells a harrowing story about what happened Thursday night. Neighbors know it well. Mike Ready knows what happened, too well. It was his two children who died as he fought to get into the burning house.
Mike and Kim Ready had invited friends over to watch movies Thursday night. The fire started as the friends were leaving for the night. Their car had gotten stuck in the driveway and Mike Redding was outside helping push them their car out. When the car was freed, he and his wife went outside to say goodbye while the children watched Bambie in the front room.
The Ready's say when they first saw the fire, it was the Christmas tree that was in flames. Neighbors arrived after seeing the flames, but it was too late. One-year-old Madison Ready and her brother Wyatt, died just weeks after Wyatt's third birthday party.
While the family blames the Christmas tree for the fire, the State Fire Marshal's office ruled the cause undeterminable, but the investigation remains open.
The funeral for the two children is set for early next week. The American Red Cross has offered assistance to the family.
