STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) _ It was a battle to avoid rock bottom. And this time, Oklahoma State didn't falter.

Aso Pogi threw for 171 yards and ran for four touchdowns Saturday in a 50-22 Cowboy win that doomed Baylor to its 21st-straight Big 12 loss and a last-place conference finish.

``The kids came out and made things happen for the first time in a long time,'' Oklahoma State coach Bob Simmons said afterward.

Pogi's four rushing touchdowns were the most since Heisman winner Barry Sanders scored five times on the ground against Kansas and Tulsa in 1988. The win ended a seven-game losing streak for the Cowboys (3-7, 1-7) and gave them their first Big 12 victory in a season that had rivaled Baylor's in terms of struggle.

A late-game rally by the beleaguered Bears (2-9, 0-8) couldn't overcome a series of early turnovers or a Cowboy defense that allowed only 66 yards rushing.

``The defense gave us great field position,'' Simmons said. ``We were up 17 to 20 points with 10 minutes left to go in the first quarter and the key was to keep the momentum going at the half and we did that.

``A lot of guys are smiling,'' said the coach, who will leave the team at the end of the season.

Pogi completed 14 of 18 passes and scored on runs of 6 and 5 yards, and twice went over from the 1. Reggie White's 78 yards rushing pushed him over the 1,000-yard mark for the season and led an Oklahoma State ground attack that totaled 240 yards.

Oklahoma State's defense kept the Cowboys in position to score throughout the first half and ensured that turnovers were Baylor's undoing from the first snap.

Bears freshman quarterback Josh Zachry was sacked in the first seconds and fumbled for a 19-yard loss that put the Cowboys on Baylor's 1-yard line. Pogi followed with an easy touchdown dive.

Baylor's first four possessions ended in turnovers and set up Oklahoma State scoring drives each time. The Bears didn't reach Cowboys territory until midway through the second quarter.

Baylor coach Kevin Steele said Oklahoma State's early lead did the most damage in the Bears' season finale.

``I have been in games where there was a hole in the dam and you stick your finger in and another hole opens over here,'' he said. ``They didn't just open the floodgates. The whole dam broke.''

Zachry, the fifth different quarterback this season for the injury-crippled Bears, met Reggie Newhouse with a 9-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter and 20-yard pass to Robert Quiroga midway through the fourth quarter.

Zachry was 17 for 35 for 227 yards, but was intercepted three times.

It was Oklahoma State's biggest margin of victory since beating Kansas last season 45-13 and came a week after the Cowboys lost 58-0 to Texas Tech. Oklahoma State finishes its season next week against in-state rival Oklahoma, ranked No. 1 nationally.

``Credit the defense,'' Pogi said. ``They played well all around. They gave us an opportunity to do something when we got the ball.''
