(Tulsa-AP) -- U.S. Attorney Steve Lewis will resign his position in December and return to private law practice in Tulsa. Lewis made the announcement today.

U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno will appoint an interim successor to Lewis.

Lewis was appointed to the post in 1993. President Clinton recommended Lewis' appointment and he was confirmed by the U.S.

Senate.

He is a former speaker of the Oklahoma House of Representatives and an ex-central Oklahoma prosecutor.

Lewis practiced law in Shawnee before moving to Tulsa to accept the appointment.

He will be joining the Tulsa law firm of Barrow, Gaddis, Griffith and Grimm as "of counsel" to the firm.
