SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A man killed himself by jumping off the Bay Bridge a day after his girlfriend 's body was found along a remote coastal highway.

Darion Sable, 23, jumped off an approach to the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge on Tuesday, falling about 100 feet before landing on pavement in a fenced-in area, police spokesman Dewayne Tully said.

Sable had called police Saturday to report that Jerusha Briley, 20, disappeared that morning while going to buy groceries for her 23-month-old son. He said she wasn't the type to leave the house — let alone her toddler — for more than a few hours without letting people know where she was.

Briley's body was found Monday. Police haven't determined the cause of death.

Sable was released on his own recognizance Tuesday after being jailed overnight on a drug charge, police said.

Sable committed suicide 15 minutes later, five blocks away. Officers had followed Sable after his release to see if he would lead them to any new information in Briley's death, said Sgt. James Deignan.

Homicide Inspector Tony Casillas wouldn't say whether police told Sable he was a suspect in his girlfriend's death before letting him go.

Police said Sable probably did not know he was being followed and that officers had no time to stop him from jumping.
