(Seattle-AP) -- The Sonics have signed Desmond Mason to a three-year contract.

The six-foot-five guard-forward swingman out of Oklahoma State was the 17th pick overall in the N-B-A draft. He averaged 18 points and nearly seven points a game in his senior year. He played in the Summer League and averaged 18 points in six games.

Seattle coach Paul Westphal says his knowledge of the game is ahead of most rookies and Mason should be able to contribute to the Sonics right away.

Mason is a native of Waxahachie, Texas.
