Pat Summerall plans to retire as an NFL announcer after the 2001 season, it was reported Monday.
Summerall was to make an announcement Monday at a news conference in Los Angeles, The Dallas Morning News said, quoting unidentified sources at Fox. The New York Times also reported that Summerall will end his football broadcasting career after two more seasons.
Summerall's contract expires after the upcoming season. The Morning News said Fox will give him a one-year extension that will allow him to call a record 16th Super Bowl.
The 70-year-old announcer may continue to work for Fox on non-football assignments, the newspaper said.
Summerall has broadcast games for CBS and Fox since the end of his playing career in 1962. The former NFL kicker starred for the New York Giants and lives outside Dallas.
