(Jay-AP) -- Delaware County authorities say a man shot by a sheriff's deputy when he took a Jay convenience store clerk hostage is in custody. Authorities say 25-year-old Coy "Pete" Black was extradited earlier this week from the Missouri hospital where he was treated for a bullet wound to his arm and wrist.
Sheriff Jim Earp says Black was followed into the convenience store about 3 a-m Friday by two Jay police officers trying to question him. Earp says the officers had been told that Black had a knife and could be dangerous. Once inside the store, Black ran behind the counter, grabbed the clerk and put a knife to his throat. Deputy Heath Lynn shot Black when Black said he was going to slit the clerk's throat. Black has been charged with kidnapping and assault and battery with a deadly weapon.
