Only weeks after his record-setting performance at the NCAA men’s golf championships, Oklahoma State junior golfer Charles Howell will become a professional.
The OSU athletic media relations department announced Tuesday that Howell would forego his senior year and therefore deny himself a chance to defend his national title. Howell also helped the Cowboys win a team championship this season.
Howell broke the national collegiate scoring record at last month’s NCAA Championships by firing a three-round score of 23-under-par. He won the event by eight strokes.
Earlier this month, Howell was named Big 12 Men’s Athlete of the Year and national collegiate golfer of the year.
Howell ends his Cowboy career with five individual tournament titles, tying him for first in school history.
