Columbine Report May Dispute Details

GOLDEN, Colo. (AP) â€” The long-awaited sheriff's report on the Columbine High School shootings says the rampage lasted only 30 minutes and at least six people had been killed or wounded before the first panicked call reached police, the Denver Rocky Mountain News reported today.

The report, expected to be released on Monday, also disputes at least some of the allegations that blame the tragedy on delays by Jefferson County Sheriff John Stone and his deputies, the newspaper said, citing unidentified sources familiar with the investigation.

Teen-age gunmen Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 12 students and a teacher before committing suicide in the April 20, 1999, rampage.

The sheriff's report on the attack draws from 4,500 witness interviews and 10,000 pieces of evidence gathered at Columbine and at the homes of Harris and Klebold.

According to the report, the first shots rang out at 11:19 a.m. and the first 911 call came in seven minutes later, from a female student who told the dispatcher ``people are running out of the school like mad right now.''

For the next few minutes, the two gunmen roamed the school and its grounds, killing and wounding students.

The report cites a wounded witness saying either Klebold or Harris shot student Daniel Rohrbough as he stood outside the building, and that Harris then shot Rohrbough twice more, killing him.

Rohrbough's parents alleged in a lawsuit that their son was shot and killed by deputies.

The report also appears to contradict a lawsuit filed by the daughter of slain teacher Dave Sanders that contends a police sniper had one of the gunmen in his sights but was ordered not to shoot.

The report indicates Harris and Klebold killed themselves before sniper teams were in place, the sources told the newspaper.

The report also shows that Deputy Neal Gardner, who was assigned to the school, immediately responded to a janitor's reports of trouble in the school's southwest parking lot, where Gardner exchanged shots with Harris, the sources said.

A judge hearing some of the 15 lawsuits filed by Columbine families has ordered the sheriff's office to turn over the report to the families by Monday.

The judge already ordered the release to the families of several hours of videotape used by sheriff's investigators.
