EUFAULA, Okla. (AP) -- A McIntosh County jury found a man guilty in the beating death of his girlfriend's ex-husband, whose genitals were cut off.
Patrick Dwaine Murphy, 31, was convicted Thursday of first-degree murder. The jury was to return today to consider a sentence; prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
Murphy was charged in the Aug. 28 death of George Jacobs Sr., 49. He testified that he drank beer excessively on a daily basis and that on the day of the beating, he was intoxicated to the point that he couldn't remember what happened.
But he told Assistant District Attorney Phil Cozzoni that while he couldn't remember killing Jacobs, "It might be a possibility."
Another man, 21-year-old Billy Jack Long, also is charged with murder in the case. His trial is scheduled for September.
One of the defendant's friends, one of his cousins and his girlfriend all testified during the trial that Murphy told them shortly after the killing that he had slashed Jacobs in the throat, chest and genital area during a beating.
"It's all news to me, because I was pretty well drunk," Murphy said of the witnesses' claims.
He said there had been "many a time" that he woke up the morning after a drinking bout and was told of things he had done that he couldn't recall.
