(Greensboro, North Carolina-AP) -- Stock-car racing pioneer Lee Petty died today, several weeks after undergoing surgery for a stomach aneurysm.

An official with Petty Enterprises confirmed the death of the 85-year-old Petty.

Petty was the father of Winston Cup legend Richard Petty, grandfather of Kyle Petty and great-grandfather of Adam Petty, who made his Winston Cup debut this past weekend in Texas.

Lee Petty was a three-time champion on what has become the Winston Cup circuit and won the inaugural Daytona 500 in 1959.
