CATOOSA, Okla. (AP) -- Last month was the most active February in the 29-year history of the Tulsa Port of Catoosa on the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System, officials say.
More than 245,000 tons of cargo passed through the port in February compared with 196,000 tons for the same month last year. The river system links inland ports like Catoosa with the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico.
"There was a strong increase in the amount of steel and pipe, dry fertilizer and asphalt received at the port," said Robert H. Chitwood, chairman of the City of Tulsa-Rogers County Port Authority.
More than 150 barges moved through the port last month compared with 98 barges in January and 121 barges in 1999.
Inbound shipments accounted for 126,000 tons compared with 69,000 tons in January and 100,000 tons a year ago. Outbound shipments came to 120,000 tons compared with 106,000 tons in January and 96,000 tons a year ago.
Since opening in 1971, the port has served more than 27,000 barges carrying 43 million tons of cargo.
